Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Sealed, Ported, Bass Reflex, or Acoustic Suspension woofer boxes? These are all "direct radiator" enclosures, so named because the sound is produced directly from the "radiator" (the driver or speaker) without the assistance of a contrivance such as a horn. Other types such as, Bandpass, and Coupled Cavity enclosures are similar, but more complex. You should understand that enclosures exist solely for the purpose of accommodating the woofer. Tweeters and midrange speakers do not have to be enclosed at all, though for the sake of convenience they are often mounted in enclosures along with the woofer. To help you decide which type of enclosure is best for your purposes, and for a deeper understanding of all types of woofer boxes and how to build them, take a few moments to study the information on the Enclosures page of our Technical Advice and Assistance section. Once you have familiarized yourself with the various technical aspects, if you chose to buy rather than build your own, you can return to this page and choose from a wide variety of woofer boxes and tubes, both empty and loaded, from respected manufacturers like Absolute, Atrend, Audiobahn, Bazooka, Kicker, Lanzar, MTX, Orion, Pioneer, Pyle, Pyramid, Rockford Fosgate, and Scosche. |
