As we state in our Technical Advice and Assistance section, receivers (head units) can be very different. Even if you think you know what you are doing, it is advisable to read the instructions that come with your unit. These will usually identify the wires and their connections, as well as offering special instructions. This information may be on one of the unit covers as well. The unit wiring colors will differ from the car's own wiring scheme.

To properly install a head unit, you should have the following tools on hand: wire strippers, pliers, screwdrivers, wire crimpers and wire nuts, 12-volt light tester or, preferably, a Volt-OhmMeter, and electrical tape. (newer cars have extensive internal electronics that might be damaged if a light tester is used).
